                                                   Position Description

 

 

POSITION TITLE:    Special Education Teacher (Visually Impaired)

FLSA:                       Exempt Professional

 

REPORTS TO:         Buidling Administrator/Director of Special Services

 

QUALIFICATIONS:       

  • Current state teaching certificate in Special Education - Visual Impairments preferred

  • Positive interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated team building skills.

  • Knowledge of the Special Education process and laws.

  • Excellent organizational skills, oral and written skills, time management, and telephone skills.

  • Computer skills and knowledge of assistive technology are desired.

 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Working with other teachers or administrators to revise classroom programs for special needs students
  • Conferring with parents, guardians and educational professionals to develop an individual education plan (IEP) for a student
  • Coordinating placement when students are able to join traditional classrooms
  • Devising, with other staff members, a teaching plan and lesson schedule which promotes learning within the approved curriculum
  • Using special education techniques in the classroom to improve the development of students’ motor skills, language, thinking or memory
  • Working to meet a variety of needs present in a single classroom.
  • Responsible for the special education process from screening through identification, IEP development, and assist in providing appropriate identification and placement of students with disabilities. 
  • Assist in the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Act, (IDEA) in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Organize and ensure completion of all evaluation reports and IEPs.
  • Complete reviews of all special education IEP documents, ensuring compliance with District procedure, state, and federal laws; identifies areas of need within the areas of compliance and works to develop and implement programs to address those needs.
  • Initiate screening of transfer and new referral records and contacts previous school district to obtain necessary information on new students.
  • Perform and monitor evaluation and timelines to ensure appropriate student placement and programming.
  • Work with principals, department heads and other team members to facilitate the integration of all students into regular classes as appropriate.
  • Assist in the preparation of federal, state and local reports on special education.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions related to special education as deemed appropriate by the Executive Director of Pupil Services.
  • Maintains confidentiality and non-judgmental views of children and families served.
  • Performs any other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Executive Director of Pupil Services or Superintendent.
