POSITION TITLE: Director of Special Education

 

REPORTS TO:            

Superintendent (or Assistant Superintendent)

 

SUPERVISES:

Special Education Staff in coordination with the School Principals Additionally supervises Psychologists, Visiting Teacher. ESL Coordinator and Special Education Secretary 

 

FLSA:

Exempt

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must hold proper state certification

Master’s degree (or progress towards a master’s degree) 

                      

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Coordinates and supervises the Special Education Program.
  2. Coordinates process for Special Education eligibility.
  3. Coordinates Special Education Advisory Council Meetings.
  4. Assures that all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to Special Education are followed.
  5. Attends regional and state Special Education meetings representing RCPS.
  6. Coordinates the grant applications and Special Education budget development and implementation.
  1. Works closely with the Chief Finance Officer regarding the Special Education Budget.
  2. Supervises and evaluates Special Education Secretary, Psychologist, Visiting Teacher.
  3. Coordinates and oversees the homebound program.
  4. Meets with the Superintendent and School Board on hearings regarding Special Education students.
  5. Meets with parents as appropriate.
  6. Encourages an inviting learning environment and high expectations among staff·: students, parents and the greater community.
  7. Effectively communicates with staff; parents, students, and the greater community.
  8. Maintains records and oversees the preparation of reports as requested by the School Division Superintendent and for State and Federal Reports.
  9. Participates in staff development for personal and professional growth.
  10. Follows all school division rules, regulations, and policies as well as State and Federal laws.
  11. Other duties as assigned by the Division Superintendent.

 

Minimum Training and Experience 

Master's degree (or progress towards a master's degree). 

Eligible (or progress toward eligibility) for a post-graduate license in the state of Virginia. Successful experience in special education.
