POSITION TITLE: Director of Special Education
REPORTS TO:
Superintendent (or Assistant Superintendent)
SUPERVISES:
Special Education Staff in coordination with the School Principals Additionally supervises Psychologists, Visiting Teacher. ESL Coordinator and Special Education Secretary
FLSA:
Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must hold proper state certification
Master’s degree (or progress towards a master’s degree)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinates and supervises the Special Education Program.
- Coordinates process for Special Education eligibility.
- Coordinates Special Education Advisory Council Meetings.
- Assures that all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to Special Education are followed.
- Attends regional and state Special Education meetings representing RCPS.
- Coordinates the grant applications and Special Education budget development and implementation.
- Works closely with the Chief Finance Officer regarding the Special Education Budget.
- Supervises and evaluates Special Education Secretary, Psychologist, Visiting Teacher.
- Coordinates and oversees the homebound program.
- Meets with the Superintendent and School Board on hearings regarding Special Education students.
- Meets with parents as appropriate.
- Encourages an inviting learning environment and high expectations among staff·: students, parents and the greater community.
- Effectively communicates with staff; parents, students, and the greater community.
- Maintains records and oversees the preparation of reports as requested by the School Division Superintendent and for State and Federal Reports.
- Participates in staff development for personal and professional growth.
- Follows all school division rules, regulations, and policies as well as State and Federal laws.
- Other duties as assigned by the Division Superintendent.
Minimum Training and Experience
Master's degree (or progress towards a master's degree).
Eligible (or progress toward eligibility) for a post-graduate license in the state of Virginia. Successful experience in special education. |
