Job Title:               Math Instructional Coach
Reports to:            Assistant Superintendent
Supervises:           Not Applicable 
Type of Position:   Exempt

 

Primary Functions:

  1. Develop and implement instruction that will effectively provide the best possible mathematics program for each teacher and student. 
  2. Supporting the professional growth and development of teachers to facilitate learning and independent application of effective instructional practices. 
  3. Provide job-embedded support through planning, modeling, co-teaching, conducting classroom visits, analyzing data, and offering collegial and actionable feedback. 
  4. Plan and conduct professional development based on assessed division and/or teacher needs. 

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Assesses the individual and collective needs of teachers at assigned schools.
  2. Creates a comprehensive and systematic plan to support the professional growth of teachers.
  3. Models effective instructional techniques and strategies that engage learners.
  4. Provides differentiated coaching assistance through co-planning, modeling, co-teaching, and observing to deliver timely and appropriate feedback.
  5. Structures coaching work using a gradual release model to ensure independent ownership and attainment of co-developed goals.
  6. Works collaboratively to help teachers analyze data and plan targeted and appropriate lessons.
  7. Develops individualized plans to support teacher sustainment of goals.
  8. Assists with writing exemplary lesson plans to serve as a model.
  9. Provides support in the areas of classroom motivation and management to help teachers establish orderly learning environments.
  10. Plans and conducts high-quality professional development activities in response to assessed needs.
  11. Works positively toward meeting identified district and building goals.
  12. Supports teachers in the development and implementation of professional growth plans.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess at minimum a Bachelor’s degree or higher and hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license (Mathematics Specialist endorsement preferred).
  • Must have completed a minimum of five years of exemplary teaching experience in grades 3-12.
  • Mentorship or leadership experience preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Ability to monitor the academic and social behavior of students.
  • Ability to move about the room to monitor students and check work in classrooms with varied seating and desk organization patterns.
  • Ability to prepare required written reports.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of data disaggregation to develop and utilize school-level reports.

  • Comply with school and school board policies and regulations
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of mathematics best practices
  • Demonstrate teaching strategies in the classroom
  • Work cooperatively with all staff
  • Relate positively to parents and other community representatives
  • Be prompt and accurate with required records and reports
  • Demonstrate command of standard English, both spoken and written
  • Accept responsibilities outside the classroom as they relate to the school
  • Assume responsibility for the care of materials, equipment and facilities
  • Assume responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students committed to the teacher's care
  • Teach collaboratively in the inclusion model
  • Function as a member of school teams and committees, as appropriate to role.
  • Consult with classroom teachers and administrators concerning mathematics issues
  • Conduct staff development sessions in mathematics
  • Recommend purchases for mathematics materials and curriculum 
  • Consult with the principal (i.e. grouping, child assistance)
  • Monitor mathematics assessment data
  • Demonstrate teaching strategies in classroom
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the assistant superintendent.
