TITLE: Afterschool Youth Enrichment Intern
REPORTS TO: Afterschool Site Director
RATE OF PAY: $15.00 per hour, 8 to 15 hours per week
HOURS: Mon., Tues., Wed., Fri. 3:20 - 5:30
Thurs. 12:30 - 5:30
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The YMCA at Virginia Tech will offer several paid internship positions averaging 8 to 15 hours per week, depending upon intern’s availability. The final schedule is TBD, but will involve a combination of shifts ranging Monday to Friday between the hours of 3:00 – 5:30
p.m. The focus of this work will be delivery of an elementary-aged after-school program for Radford City Public Schools.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Classroom management
- Maintain positive classroom dynamics for a class of up to 15 youth
- Establish and maintain a professional rapport with participants and their parents
- Ensure interactions support positive socio/emotional/cognitive/physical growth and development of participants
- Lead program activities
- Employ small group dynamics to create an engaging atmosphere and “safe space” for the participants
- Lead enrichment activities for youth including but not limited to: educational activities, arts & crafts, and sport & recreational activities
- Plan activities and develop a schedule to meet the desired goals of the program
- Monitor youth participation and respond appropriately to incidents such as accidents, behavioral issues, etc.
- General program delivery
- Assist with snacks each day
- Help identify, create, and deliver enrichment projects and activities
- Adhere to all policies and procedures
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
- A passion for working with children and youth enrichment programming
- A strong Attention to detail, accuracy, and meeting Good judgment and discretion.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently within a fast-paced environment
- Ability to maintain a high-level of professionalism, work ethic, and integrity
- Ability to communicate effectively with various individuals and stakeholders
- Ability to complete a criminal history background check AND central registry background check prior to employment
